Boston, March 17— PowerOptions, the state’s premiere energy-buying consortium for nonprofits and government entities, today announced that Barbara “Bobbi” Kates-Garnick, a former state Energy Undersecretary and Keyspan officer, with more than 30 years experience in both the public and private sector, is rejoining its Board of Directors.
Kates-Garnick, a Boston resident, is currently a professor at Tufts University’s Fletcher School, where she is also the director of the Energy Climate and Innovation Program. She was an original member of the team of experts who conceived of and created PowerOptions and was a founding member of PowerOptions’ Board of Trustees, where she served from 1998 – 2011. She took a short hiatus from the board to serve as Governor Deval Patrick’s Energy Undersecretary and is now returning to PowerOptions.
“We’re thrilled to have Bobbi returning to the board,” said PowerOptions President and Chief Executive Officer Cindy Arcate. “In her 13 years on the board, Bobbi contributed a wealth of institutional knowledge and innovative ideas and will only add to the tremendous depth on our impressive Board of Directors.”
Kates-Garnick has worked in high-level positions in both the public and private sectors. Her private sector achievements include serving as an officer at KeySpan where, as corporate affairs vice president, she developed energy policy strategy and directed the governmental communications and community relations teams. She served as a Public Utilities Commissioner and then Energy Undersecretary, as well as an assistant secretary in the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs. She also founded the New England office of New Energy Ventures, an electric supplier that operates nationally now as Constellation NewEnergy.
With this reappointment, Kates-Garnick joins a team that includes, PowerOptions Board Chair and Emerson Hospital’s President & CEO Christine C. Schuster, Board Treasurer and Former President at Allenergy and Massachusetts Electric John H. Dickson, Vice President of Policy & Government Relations for the New England Clean Energy Council Janet Gail Besser, President of Conservation Services Group Tina M. Bennett, Former Executive Vice President at National Grid John Cochrane and Director for Public Finance & Investment Banking at TD Securities Ike Papadopoulos.
“I’m delighted to return to PowerOptions’ board,” said Kates-Garnick. “The PowerOptions team plays a crucial role in ensuring energy predictability, dependability and cost savings to a wide array of partners, including some of the Commonwealth’s most impactful nonprofits.”
PowerOptions is the largest electricity and natural gas purchasing consortium of its kind in Massachusetts, with roughly $200 million of annual energy commodity purchases and a combined demand for approximately 200 megawatts of electricity and 13 million dekatherms of natural gas usage. Any nonprofit or public institution in Massachusetts may become a member and participate in this collective purchasing effort. For more information, visit www.poweroptions.org.
